Mausoleum of Makhambet Utemisuly

The Mausoleum of Makhambet Utemisuly is located 40 kilometers southeast of the village of Inderbor, Inder district, Atyrau region. This place is a cultural and historical monument that perpetuates the name of the great Kazakh poet, batyr, and freedom fighter.

The poet’s grave was first marked in 1846 with an octagonal tombstone. In 1995, for the 200th anniversary of Makhambet, a mausoleum made of white stone with elements of ancient oriental architecture was erected here. The modern mausoleum is 12.2 meters high and has an outer diameter of 7.6 meters. The entrance to the mausoleum is decorated with an ornate arch. Its architectural appearance stands out in the steppe space, exalting the spirit of the great poet.

In the national liberation uprising of 1836-1837 led by Isatai Taimanuly, Makhambet played the role of a spiritual leader and inspired the people to fight for freedom with his poems.

Makhambet is a poet who sang of the needs and aspirations of the common people in the Kazakh steppe. His poems reflect the desire for freedom, the struggle against injustice, and the spirit of heroism. On October 20, 1846, he died at the hands of his enemies.

Today, the poet’s mausoleum is not only a historical place but also an architectural work that emphasizes the greatness of the Kazakh heritage and spiritual values.
