Kanysh Satpayev (1899-1964) – a prominent geologist, public figure, organizer, the first president of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. Born in the Semipalatinsk region, a graduate of the Tomsk Technological Institute. He headed the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan (1946-1952 and 1955-1964), was a laureate of the USSR State Prize, and was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Patriotic War.
In 1992, a monument to the scientist was erected on K.Satpayev Street, which was opened by the city akim N.Makhashev. Later, in 2001, the monument was moved to the intersection of K.Satpayev and A.Baitursynov streets.
The monument is a bust made of Kurtin granite, located on an area with a total area of 1,400 square meters. Height – 4.52 m, width – 1.35 m. The pedestal is located on a ramp of 12.2×12.2 m, and the weight of the bust is 1.2 tons.
