In the center of Atyrau, in front of the regional Akimat, a monument to Sultan Baybars is erected. This is the only monument in the world to a Kipchak who was the ruler of Egypt.
The monument consists of a statue of Sultan Baybars standing on a high pedestal. The statue is made of granite and is 7.2 meters high. The total height with the pedestal is 11.8 meters. The authors of the monument are sculptor K. Kakimov and architect K. Zhumabay. Next to the monument are stone sculptures in the form of a tower and a yurt, and behind the monument is a hemisphere with runic inscriptions in the ancient Turkic language. The monument was opened in 2000, and the opening ceremony was attended by the President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev.
Baybars was born in Desht-i-Kipchak, captured during the Mongol invasion, and brought to Egypt as a slave. He became a brave warrior of the Egyptian ruler Salih Sultan, and later ascended the throne and ruled the country for 17 years. Baybars spoke only in the Kipchak language and introduced elements of Kipchak traditions in the country. In the Arab world, he is considered the founder of the Egyptian state.
In 2000, the central square in Atyrau, where the monument is located, was named after Sultan Baybars.
